Toronto Streets

A couple of weeks ago, I was on a walk in the west end of downtown when I saw this street. I was struck by way it looked, so I came back a couple times to take notes and shoot pictures. Then I finished this painting back at my studio, working in gouache and ink on watercolour paper.

I love the asymmetrical composition. Very balanced.
Will you publish these illustrations in a book?

Another one of your beautiful streetscapes. Agree with Andrea - great composition. Nice colour composition too

Gorgeous, as always! I love your color in this piece!

Yeah! You should do an entire book of streetscapes.

I'd shoplift a copy!

What gets me is how there is nothing in the background. I haven't been to Ontario in over a decade and forgot how flat it is. Here in VT, USA, there's always something in the background.

I really dig your 'softer' style.

Curious: What did you take for notes that the camera couldn't capture?

Beautiful illustration. I totally agree with B. Clay Moore: an entire book of cityscapes would be great.

It feels to me like the closing shot of a film where everyone died or lead miserable lives (like a Toronto virgin suicides). Beautiful.

re bclaymore: such a book is coming out from D&Q

Thanks, everyone. For those who asked, yes, there will be a book of these drawings of Toronto. I'm working on it now.

Arkonbey: I took notes on the lighting and did a quick couple of sketches of the composition in addition to taking photos.
